Foods that mothers should not eat while breastfeeding

When the mother begins to breastfeed her baby, she has a lot of doubts about the position, the amount of milk to offer the baby or even about the foods you should and should not eat during this period.

While breastfeeding the baby the woman can eat normally, but there are foods that, according to doctors, should be avoided, since what the mother eats will affect the health of her little one.

Special attention should be paid to feeding during lactation. It is not about forbidding foods during this stage, it is about recommendations to avoid them or consume them in moderation, especially in the first months of breastfeeding.

1- Alcohol in lactation
Alcohol has been shown to be detrimental to a baby's brain development. Its effect on the breastfed baby is related to how much mommy drinks and how long she drank. The alcohol level passes quickly into breast milk, especially between 30 and 60 minutes after drinking.

The committee of Lactation of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics advises not to drink alcohol during the first three months of breastfeeding. Once this time has passed, you could drink occasionally in small amounts and, if possible, away from the intakes.

2- Coffee in lactation
It has been shown that when the mother consumes caffeine, present in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, or some medications, it appears quickly in breast milk, especially within an hour or an hour and a half of ingestion.

In babies, caffeine metabolism is slower than in adults, which means that if the nursing mother consumes a large amount of caffeine, it accumulates in the baby's body and can cause symptoms such as insomnia, nervousness , and baby irritability. So, better to consume them decaffeinated!

3- Foods that cause colic to the baby
It has long been thought that if the mother ate certain foods, such as spices, cabbages or legumes, babies would suffer more colic, but this has been shown to be not true.

4- Onion, garlic, artichoke, citrus and cauliflower
This type of food can alter and change the taste of milk, but this does not have to cause the baby to reject the breast, on the contrary, it prepares him for when he begins with complementary feeding.

If after taking a particular food you notice that your baby rejects the breast, you can avoid it for a few days and try again after a few weeks. Maybe it was something specific!

Remember that it is very important that the mother eats well during breastfeeding, with a healthy and balanced diet that includes all the food groups, and if you have any questions, consult your doctor.

The lactating woman should pay special attention to her diet, of course, but also to the type of habits she carries out during breastfeeding. Here we refer you to how it affects the tobacco consumption to the health of the baby and how it can interfere in this process so natural and human:

- The milk of the smoking mother has other componentsdifferent from those of the mother who does not smoke because of the cigarette. For example, it contains higher levels of cadmium, mercury, and other heavy metals but less protein, antioxidants, and group A, C, and E vitamins.

- The fact that the mother smokes can also considerably reduce the daily milk production, causing the child to remain hungry, cry and the woman to despair and abandon breastfeeding.

- On the other hand, the risk of sudden infant death increases and is related to low baby weight, as well as obesity problems in the future.

- When living in a smoky environment, the baby inhales smoke particles that can sometimes lead to asthma episodes and develop other respiratory diseases.

- And, one last recommendation that the experts make to smoking mothers, not to practice co-sleeping, that is, not to sleep with the baby in bed.

Quitting tobacco is not an easy task, but it is possible to reduce its consumption and, for example, smoke less, do not do it inside the family home and wait two hours to breastfeed after the last cigarette.
