Once the news that a new member of the family has arrived is confirmed, knowing what the due date will be is an exciting unknown for parents. For many it is important to be able to get closer to when their child will be born in order to organize the relevant preparations, and others for the simple illusion of being able to get closer to the day when they will meet their baby. How to know that long awaited day? Is it the same in all cases? It can calculate the due date of an IVF? A long-awaited date that is impossible to calculate exactly, taking into account the many factors that can condition a pregnancy, but only approximate.

The due date of a woman with a spontaneous pregnancy is estimated by weighing the last period; In other words, taking into account the last time the woman's period began, it can be known more or less exactly when ovulation took place depending on the regularity of her cycles.

Ovulation is a process that occurs approximately 14 days into the menstrual cycle, and with this data it is possible to count the remaining time of pregnancy. As it is understood that it is from this moment of the month when ovulation occurs, it will be from that moment when the process of fertilization and implantation occurs.

On the other hand, in the treatments of in vitro fertilization It is not possible to perform the same calculations since ovarian stimulation can alter the times. So, to be able to approximate the date of delivery in an IVF process, the day of the ovarian puncture will be considered as the ovulation date. Consequently, two weeks before (when the rule would have supposedly lowered) would be when the date of the last theoretical rule would begin to be counted.

Once this calculation is made, other parameters are taken into account. On the one hand, the predicted date may vary because, to perform an In Vitro Fertilization, it is necessary to go through an ovarian stimulation process, the purpose of which is to increase the chances of becoming pregnant.

Also, the days of life of the embryo must be taken into account. This aspect is important because an IVF pregnancy begins outside the womb. Fertilization is the procedure by which two gametes fuse, and this process, in the case of IVF, has already occurred days before implantation in the laboratory.

Basically this means that in assisted reproduction cases an embryo is inserted, usually 3-5 days after ovarian puncture. In summary, when a woman undergoes IVF, there are 3 key factors. On the one hand, ovulation will be counted as the day of the puncture, on the other, it should be considered that the fertilization process has already occurred and the embryos will have between 3 to 5 days when we implant them and on the other hand, the ovarian puncture may vary in this type of treatment due to ovarian stimulation, so the calculations may not be exact in a matter of days.

Let's take an example of calculation of delivery date for women undergoing in vitro fertilization andso you can better understand the procedure. A woman receives an IVF implantation on May 28, 2019 of an embryo that has a life of 5 days.

The result would be that the FUR (Date of the Last Rule) would be considered 19 days before said implantation, (14 days of ovulation + 5 days of life of the embryo). Once this date has been calculated, it would only be necessary to add the 37 - 42 weeks of pregnancy to determine the day of delivery.
