One of the most common back injuries in childhood is scoliosis which is known in medical terms as idiopathic scoliosis. It is about the formation of abnormal curvatures in the back.
It is appreciated, in addition to an X-ray, when the child is seen from behind. The spine without scoliosis makes a vertical one, the one that does have it presents a curvature to the right or to the left (in the shape of a C). However, there are generally both curvatures (S-shaped): a main one on top and a secondary compensatory one on the opposite side.
The scoliosis causes other collateral damage and is that the shoulder, shoulder blade or hip are higher on one side than the other.
Causes of scoliosis in children
It is called idiopathic because the cause of this disorder is unknown in most cases, although some studies suggest that there is a genetic component in its appearance. And it is that this back injury occurs in some families much more than in others.
Symptoms of scoliosis in childhood
In many cases it does not cause back pain, respiratory problems or any other dysfunction, which is usually seen in medical consultations or periodic check-ups of the child or, if it is very evident, the parents perceive the deflection on your children's back.
In order to appreciate this deviation in the back, the child has to undress from the waist up and lean forward, this test is known as "front lean Adam". It also allows to know if there are some members with different lengths or other problems. An X-ray will confirm this deviation and its degree of deviation.
Treatment for scoliosis in children
What can be done? The measures are always focused on the preventive plane. Ergonomics, postural hygiene and muscular development when more and better it is done, it prevents pathologies in the back.
In the event that the back is already deviated, it is important to follow medical indications since otherwise there may be a progressive deterioration of the curve leading to problems such as reduced lung capacity.
When the curve is less than 20ยบ the doctor will check that it does not get progressively worse and posture measures and some sport, such as swimming, that strengthens the back, will be indicated.
If the curvature is greater, the use of a corset or surgery may be necessary.
