The correct growth of the back of children is essential to avoid ailments in the future. The spine is the axis, the main support of our skeleton. In the age of growth of children, between 9 and 12 years, most of the deviations of the spine occur.
These deviations can be postural or functional, that is, given by the way in which the child sits, walks and performs the movements of their daily life. Or they can be structured, more difficult to correct due to the difficulty in 'standing up', since the spine deviates from its axis to the sides or back and forth, and may present scoliosis, hyperlordosis or kyphosis, respectively.
1. In the case of adopting a forward 'stooped' posture (dorsal kyphosis).Posture lying face up on the floor, with the legs raised (as close to 90º as possible) resting the heels against the wall, and the arms at the sides of the body in a cross (forming 90º with the trunk) with the palms facing up.
Pay attention to the breath trying to expand the chest, open it, and on each exhalation push with the tips of the fingers of the hands outwards, until you feel the stretch in the chest area. At the same time, the shoulders should be lowered, avoiding stressing the traps.
2. In the case of a 'stick tail' posture (lumbar hyperlordosis).Lying on your back with your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart. Check that the waist is in contact with the floor. Perform the movement of 'sticking the tail' trying to make the lumbar region flatten the floor well, without lifting or detaching the sacrum from the floor as little as possible. And loosen the movement.
Repeat with the rhythm of the breath, making the movement with the exhalation and relaxing with the inhalation. Try to perform the movement with the least force possible.
It is important to mention that these exercises should not cause pain. Yes, the stretch can be felt, but it shouldn't be unpleasant by any means. It is always advisable to carry out some physical activity where you become aware of the body, since currently there is a tendency to sedentary lifestyle, which negatively affects health.
In the event that the pediatrician or traumatologist has diagnosed scoliosis, dorsal kyphosis or lumbar hyperlordosis, the kinesiologist or physiotherapist may treat the child with a series of corrective postural exercises, so that the curvature does not continue to advance during the child's growth , paying special attention to the moment when he 'hits the lug'. Depending on the degree of curvature, the orthopedist will indicate the use of orthotics or surgery.
Cases ofpostural deviations They are the vast majority and, in general, children do not usually receive care from the health team, which can increase the chances of 'fixing' this bad posture in their adulthood, which in many cases causes back pain and it is more expensive to modify it.
