Learn to Surfing the Internet safely is a must for children and I say essential because the network already offers so many open, pop-up, public, private, informative, social and educational windows that it is dangerous to let children stand in front of a computer and start browsing without criteria, without order, without a specific interest or without knowing how to use social networks wisely.
Today, both parents and educators are aware of this challenge. Thus, in schools and institutes talks are given regularly for students in the last years of Primary and ESO, where all the tools with which you can navigate on the Internet are exposed and explained. kids are warned of the danger of negligent use of social media and what can happen when they invite someone who is not a friend or they do not know to their account, what could happen when they publish their personal data (name, address, school, sports team) or give clues for others find out.
Keep in mind that on the Internet, we can all find everything and children too. For this reason, no child should surf the Internet without having consulted some web pages where children are explained what safe browsing is. In the same way that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle without having studied the highway code or having given practical driving lessons is a danger for oneself and for others, surfing the Internet without knowing how is also a danger, above all, because access to the computer is increasingly occurring at younger ages and the level of maturity among children, adolescents and young people is very different.
Nevertheless, It is one thing to surf the Internet and another to be a true cybernaut. Children, thanks to their innate curiosity and thanks to their ease of adaptation to new media, have become Internet users, and, in many cases, advanced users. From the adult perspective, while the Internet offers clear advantages in the field of education, since it reduces obstacles to the creation and distribution of content and offers wide access to increasingly rich sources of digital information, on the other hand, the minors represent the most vulnerable group within network users: they are potential victims of illicit activities (child trafficking, pornography and child prostitution) and have easy access to inadvisable content (pornography, violence, racism, xenophobia, discrimination on the grounds of gender) that may negatively affect their physical, mental, spiritual and social development.
For this reason, adequate protection necessarily implies a good knowledge of the operation of the network and its possibilities, the necessary training to detect potentially harmful content and information on the existing protection mechanisms, both technical and legal. In short, the best prevention method against the harmful use of the Internet, passes through Education. Knowing exactly the possibilities of using the Internet and its dangers should not be limited only to the technical framework, but children should apply in their use other concepts of Education such as the values of interdependence, social justice, tolerance and respect, among others.
