No, do not think that in this article we are going to tell you at what age you should give your child a watch, not if digital watches, hands or time counting devices are more advantageous. Nothing of that. Let's talk about one more important thing, the chronobiology, or "life clock" of children. In Spain we have a researcher of enormous international prestige, within the field of chronobiology: Marta Garaulet, professor of Physiology at the University of Murcia.
Maybe you wonder what this is about chronobiology. Very simple: it is the discipline in charge of studying how the human body works according to the time of day in which we are. There are very clear interindividual variations. For example, there are people who enjoy getting up early, who are prepared to do multiple activities very early in the morning ... And there are other people to whom the opposite happens: they get active in the evening, go to bed late, get up bad mood if they get up early, etc. Despite these variations, there are also universal nuances in this world that we are presenting to you. That is, there are common traits whose knowledge will facilitate that we do not contradict our physiology.
Next, we provide you with a series below tips to take advantage of the common aspects of the vital clock that we all have, including your children. Also you, as a parent, can benefit:
1. Early in the morning (around 8: 00-8: 30), intestinal peristalsis is faster. Does this fact imply? What in the morning, evacuating is easier. Tip: Tell your kids to sit on the toilet bowl for 5 minutes after eating breakfast.
2. Around 9: 30-10: 00, our level of attention ("alertness") is optimal. If your child has an exam at that time, he will get the most out of what he studied the day before. And if you do not have an exam, you will internalize the lessons that are being explained to you in the best possible way.
3. Around 3:00 p.m., attention diminishes. At this time, and in Spain we know that wonderfully, the best we can do is rest for a while and take a nap.
4. Surely you have wondered why, almost instinctively, our children's sports extracurricular activities are in the afternoon. The reason is that around 5:00 p.m., the blood flow to the muscles increases, and it is the time of day when we are best able to play sports.
5. From 9:00 pm, the secretion of melatonin begins, coinciding with the lowest light exposure. This fact facilitates sleep. That is why it is so important that, from that hour, we do not fight against our natural tendency. This is: avoid exposing your children to tablets, mobiles and other lighting devices.
Remember that you also have this watch, and that the advice we have given you can be applied to yourself: visit the bathroom in the morning, schedule your important meetings in the first part of the morning, rest for a while after eating (yes you can), do sports in the middle of the afternoon and look at your phone a little at around 9:00 p.m. Your body will thank you.
