From the year on, children can eat practically everything: meat, fish, vegetables, fruit ... However, there are some foods that are not recommended for babies, which we must monitor and moderate, some for the mere fact that they are difficult to swallow or to digest, and others because the digestive system of the baby, still immature, does not admit them well.
Many of these foods not recommended for babies under 12 months, If the child takes them, they could cause stomach pain, gas, discomfort or simply in the stools they would be eliminated, practically undigested.
It is true that not all babies have the same digestive maturation, so parents, with the advice of their pediatrician, are the ones who should assess the adequacy of the diet of the baby under 12 months.
Babies should be avoided offering the following foods until they are 12 months old:
1. Salt. A baby does not need practically salt in his meals, since his palate is not used to it. Too much salt could overload your kidneys.
2. Sugar. It is not good to offer the baby very sugary foods, which they do not really need and do not benefit them. Milk and juices already have sugar in a natural way and you don't have to add more.
3. Milk and dairy products. Until the first year, the baby needs follow-on breast milk or formula. Cow's or goat's milk does not contain the nutrients that the baby needs during its first year of life. Also, the fats and proteins in cow's milk can be harmful to your stomach, as they are more difficult to digest and absorb.
4. Honey. Honey is not recommended for babies less than one year old. It can be irritating to your stomach.
5. Eggs. Before the first year of age, the egg can cause allergic reactions. It will start with the yolk and, from the year on, the white will be added.
6. Seafood. It can produce allergic reactions that manifest with vomiting, diarrhea or spots on the skin.
7. Legumes. They increase peristalsis, which can lead to diarrhea in the baby. From 10 months, you can offer legumes to the baby, only in moderate quantities and in pureed form.
8. Red fruits.Strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are fruits that, in some cases, can promote allergic reactions.
9. Nuts. Walnuts, almonds, peanuts and other dried fruits are not recommended before the first birthday due to possible allergic reactions. If the baby has a family history of allergy to nuts, then you have to wait until 2 years of age.
10. Foods that can choke the baby, such as grapes, cherries, candies, popcorn, olives and nuts, should be avoided.
As always, patience, observation and common sense must prevail when scheduling the baby's feeding. It is not only necessary to watch what the child eats but, very importantly, how much he eats. If the baby gets used to eating large plates of porridge, it may be promoting a future overweight or obesity.
You have to take into account the capacity of his stomach and offer him preparations that prioritize quality and variety, over quantity.
