The Theory of Mind refers to the ability we have to put ourselves in the place of others people and understand that each person perceives, feels, thinks, wants or believes in different things.

The children with autism they have difficulties in these mental capacities.

We show you how to work with children with autism so that they learn to attribute emotions to third parties.

There are different levels of work that we follow, using Anabel Cornago's Theory of Mind for children with autism manual, so that these children can develop and improve these capacities.

At these different levels we find learnings such as: verbs related to the senses, the existence of different perspectives and the understanding what seeing leads to knowing. The fourth level refers to the knowledge and proper use of some mental verbs.

With this article we will work on difference between wanting and feeling. The work materials are worksheets, social stories, sequences of actions and drawings.

The wishes that are fulfilled provide joy, but those that are not fulfilled make us feel sadness or disappointment.

1- To make the child understand these differences, we will ask questions like these:

- You want to go to your cousins' house. What do you want to take ?: A car.

- I give you the car so you can play with your cousins. How do you feel? Happy.

- Very well, you're happy because I gave you the car and it was what you wanted to go to your cousins' house.

We propose other situation.

- You want to go to your cousins' house. What do you want to take with you? A car.

- I give you a book so you can go to your cousins' house. How you feel? Sad / angry.

- Very well, you are angry because I gave you a book and you wanted the car.

2- The next step is to attribute an emotion to a different person of the child. This is a fundamental part of Theory of Mind.

For this we can present the child a photograph of a girl and we say:

- This is Ana, Ana wants to go shopping with her friends. What do you want to take? A doll.

- Ana's mother gives her a doll so she can play with her friends. How does it feel She is happy.

- Very well, Ana is happy because her mother has given her the doll she wanted.

Next, we introduce you other situation.

We point to Ana's photograph and say:

- This is Ana, Ana wants to go shopping with her friends. What do you want to take? A doll.

- Ana's mother gives her a ball. How does it feel Sad or angry

- Very well, Ana feels sad because her mother gave her the ball and she wanted the doll.

From here we can work the alternativesIn other words, that the child understands that even if a person does not receive what they want, they can feel happy with the alternative they receive.
